The Story of “Ripple”
In early 2025, the City of Mount Rainier and the Mount Rainier Arts Commission set out to transform a historic city landmark into a modern work of art. After receiving dozens of submissions, the community came together to vote on a design that would not only represent the creative spirit within the building, but also reflect the vibrant community that surrounds it. Station 3510 sits in what is known as the Gateway Arts District, which is a cornerstone of Prince George's County. The mural offers both a warm welcome to Maryland, and a vibrant exit as you travel to Washington, D.C. What began as a few brushstrokes in late June 2025 has since become the beautiful mural you now see along Rhode Island Avenue. This stunning piece, titled "Ripple", was brought to life by the talented Austin D. Morris and the team at 3711 Studios.
Artist Statement – Ripple
This mural design, titled Ripple, wraps the three visible walls of 3510 Rhode Island Ave in an imaginative celebration of movement, nature, and community. Inspired directly by feedback from Mount Rainier residents, the work invites passersby to pause, reflect, and witness the quiet yet powerful impact of movement—physical, emotional, and cultural.
About the Mural
The dreamlike moments depicted throughout the design symbolize joy, creativity, and the spirit of exploration that flows through Mount Rainier. The lotus, a symbol of beauty emerging from muddy waters, nods to the city’s green values and vibrant natural environment—including its gardens, wildflowers, and connection to the Anacostia River.
The south side of the building captures a moment of play and freedom as children leap across oversized lily pads in a tranquil bend of the nearby Anacostia River. Blooming lotus flowers are scattered about. Inspired by the community's desire for something whimsical, vibrant, and reflective of Mount Rainier’s unique character, this artwork blends movement, nature, and joy into a single, uplifting visual experience.
The north-facing wall shifts the tone to one of guidance and reflection. Children walk through shallow water, led by a Great Blue Heron—an emblem of wisdom, protection, and connection to the area’s native wildlife. A rising sun glows behind them, illuminating the path forward and casting light on the collective journey of the community.
