“MAY SAFE ARMS FIND ME”
CURATED BY JALISA IFÁDÙŃNI ORELLANA HARDY AND KIARA DANAE MANGUM
“Inhale: The world reveals itself | Exhale: But I resist isolation.” - Cole Arthur Riley
The colonial world demands that we disconnect from ourselves and one another in order to perpetuate our oppression, so it is important to know that community is key to liberation. In this show, viewers will see that we can find safe arms in ourselves, our lovers, our neighbors, our blood + chosen families, the land, and the divine. With the resonant paintings, photography, sculpture, and film on display, consider where you find safety so that your tank is full enough for the journey towards liberation.
Aiming to highlight marginalized voices and work that centers community in either process or product, this exhibition features artwork from De’ja Butler, Edom Taddesse, Elile Kebede, Greta Chapin Mcgill, Halo Noelle, Miguel Davis Jr., Nate G., nwaọ, Sebastian Harrigan-Labarca, Shemaya Bridgewater, Sierra Morris, Susan Jarvis Ragland, Tamia Edmonds, and more.
Through this exhibition, curators Kiara Danae Mangum and Jalisa Ifádùńní OH invite us to reflect: How do our senses guide us to safety? What does collective care look, taste, smell, sound and feel like? How do we return to ourselves so we can return to one another? How can returning to one another bring us back to ourselves?
Yours in love & struggle,
